Lessig on Digital Barbarism

Lawrence Lessig has posted a review of David Halperin's recent book, Digital Barbarism.

Halperin, who authored the (in)famous New York Times article calling for perpetual copyright, has now compiled his ideas into a book. Lessig offers a much-needed critique, including citing misconceptions about Creative Commons (Halperin conflates it not only with "freeware" with software... more

Dear Sir or Madam,

Without you, Dubrovnik would have seen a different Summit. My rough guess is that your donation allowed as many as fifty people to attend who otherwise would not have been able to come. That's about one sixth of the Summit! That means that fewer points of view would have been shared, and fewer countries would have been represented.

This is especially critical because despite our successes and our momentum, our movement is still in an early stage, and we have a whole planet to cover. I met people from all over the world in Dubrovnik, some of whom, like me, would never have been able to attend without you. We're now plugged into a social network that can support us better as we return to work to promote a free culture.

Your generosity was especially helpful for making the education track the most it could be. I know we've all been going on and on about how awesome our track was, so I'll spare you yet another instance of that, but suffice it to say that next year when we propose a Sapporo Declaration of principles that it will be from an open educational movement that you went a long way to form. I hope you'll agree that that's a healthy dividend on your investment!

So thank you very, very much, and should you change your mind about anonymity, please do introduce yourself to us. I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one willing to buy you a drink in Sapporo -- even though it's pretty clear you don't have to worry much about bar tabs!

Steve, you have expressed well what the scholars would have liked to. Very nicely put. And thanks for speaking out for all of us.
