This Bird of a Feather presentation – led by Creative Commons Israel - focused on marketing the CC brand, but what interested me the most what their side note on the ‘r2l problem.’ Now, maybe it’s just my ignorance, maybe it’s that I don’t know another language, but I had never heard of the r2l problem, although it’s good to hear Creative Commons is on it’s way towards fixing it.
Here’s the basic deal. Most languages read left-to-right, but for those languages that read right-to-left (Hebrew, Arabic), ordinary technologies we take for granted become very difficult to adapt. Take, for example, a technology like babblefish, or for that matter, a compiler. What are simple tasks between most languages become very difficult in Hebrew.
The good folks at CC Israel will have to explain their work, but from what I understand ccMixter and other CC technologies will automatically include a format to work with r2l text. To find out more, shoot an email to Lital at CC Israel, lital@creativecommons.org.il
