The Freedom Toaster is a vending machine-like 'Bring 'n Burn' facility that started life with The Shuttleworth Foundation (TSF) in Cape Town as a way to overcome expensive and slow internet costs associated with 'toasting' Linux distributions (including theworld-famous ' Ubuntu' product also from the astronaut's stable). The Toaster is located in schools, universities, shopping centres and radio stations around South Africa, but only months into the project, people began to contact TSF to find out how they could build their own or order a Freedom Toaster for their local community.
Faced by the enormous success of the project, Freedom Toaster project manager, Jason Hudson is looking to develop the Toaster into a hub for creative content and is developing the device for both upload and download of free materials. He's been working with Creative Commons South Africa to empower kids from the local township to use free software to make their own music and then distribute it using the Toaster in partnership with a local radio station, and now he's coming to the iCommons Summit to iCommoners how they can become involved!

Jason will be helping to conduct a workshop during the first day of the event (Friday, 23 June) where he'll be showing people how easy it is to build your own Freedom Toaster and coordinating working groups who will design plans for creative hubs in specific local communities around the world.
So if you're interested in helping to build a Toaster and design a creative hub for coffee shops, shopping malls, schools, communities centres, airports or any other interesting locations, be sure to register for the Summit today!
