A key change at iCommons

If you're not part of the iCommons mailing list, take a look at the letter that Heather Ford, Executive Director of iCommons, sent to the list yesterday:

Dear friends,

At the 2 August iCommons Board Meeting, the board decided to make some difficult but necessary changes at iCommons. It has become clear over the past months that our vision for iCommons is different from the... more

Finally! At this year’s iCommons Summit we educators get our very own track. The commons for education has grown a great deal, and while we may not always be as good at getting attention as musicians and artists (this year’s conference t-shirt says “The Art Happens Here”, for example) no one can say that being able to remix curricula isn’t as important as remixing music.

We have a good group of people who have come to Dubrovnik this year. In yesterday’s pre-conference day we set the tone for what we want to accomplish for the rest of our time here. Some old issues have reappeared, such as how an open educational resources (OER) project can build greater participation, not to mention the unanswerable question of what the tenets of an education-specific license would be. However, we’re also getting into new issues, such as how people involved in different OER projects can find out what other projects are doing, and how material can be shared when incompatible licenses have been used, and so forth. It’s particularly exciting that some of the new topics have arisen because there is so much activity, so as we resolve these issues let’s appreciate that they are nice problems to have!

I’m especially pleased to have an education track this year because it means that we’ll be able to draft a set of conclusions that will help the new Director of CC Learn get a sense of what priorities the community has when he starts later this year. The fellow will certainly have his work cut out for him in working with a group with such disparate opinions! And speaking of dealing with disparate opinions, I should compliment gunner and Mark for their effective, goal-focused moderation. We’re not an easy pack of cats to herd, so thanks guys!

The education track has been amazing - providing a safe oasis in the multitudine of people and projects and presentations at the summit.
