A story by Bjorn Wijers and Simon Dingle
Croatia is a land of warm weather, beautiful people, good beer and cats. So many cats. In fact, we spotted some locals with "CC" t-shirts while exploring old town during the iCommons Summit in Dubrovnik, Croatia and excited to speak to local commoners we asked them about their threads. Turns out CC stands for 'Cat Country'. And we're in it.
The Croatian people, unlike those in some parts of the world that regard cats with disdain, seem to be quite accommodating of their flea-infested furry countrymen. At times nauseatingly so. Cats are not, in any way, harassed in Croatia. They are not shot with BB-guns, used for hammer-throwing or chased by stray dogs (in fact, have you seen any dogs in Dubrovnik? We haven't).
It would seem that cats in Croatia enjoy similar civil liberties to cows in India. We were investigating Croatian cat-worship, but were unable to find temples or uncover other evidence of this apparent local religion.
So you know what that means: it's a cult.
And upon this realisation (and the display of our enlightenment to the local women) we were dragged into this subversive underworld of Croatian culture. We are cataloguing our interactions with local cats on Flickr. We encourage you to join us by tagging your Croatian cat-pics 'c-for-cat'. CC people unite.
The site of our elderly shuttle bus driver playing with a kitten one morning whilst waiting for us all to be ready to go to the venue was priceless! Steve Foerster · Grand Savanne, Salisbury (Dominica) · Jun 20th, 2007 5:44 am
