In Summer 2007 six Dutch organizations together started the largest digitization project in Dutch history. During the next seven years, the Images for the Future project will secure a core collection of Dutch audiovisual heritage for future use. In total, 137.200 hours of video, 22.510 hours of film, 123.900 hours of audio, and 2.9 million photos from three national archives will be restored, conserved, digitized, and opened for access via various services. Images for the Future was presented in a workshop at the iSummit 2007 in Dubrovnik.

One of the main challenges of the project is to tackle copyright issues and to explore possibilities for using Creative Commons licenses to published digitized material. The goal of this node on 'preserving audiovisual cultural heritage' is to exchange, compare and further develop best (and worst) practices in solving those copyright issues, and for giving Creative Commons licenses a chance.
