Share, remix and enjoy

Some of the participants at the ccSalon in Korea, ohoto courtesy of Yonnie KimThe first Creative Commons Salon (ccSalon), held in Seoul on 19 August, was all about sharing and enjoying music.

Hosted by Creative Commons Korea (ccKorea), more than seventy people attended the event, including international guests Tyng-Ruey Chuang from Creative Commons Taiwan (ccTaiwan) and Naoki Iguchi from Creative Commons Japan (ccJapan). Local participants varied from digital artists, bloggers and podcasters to social scientists and commons activists.

At 18:30, the Salon was opened with a promotional video clip about ccKorea, produced and donated by young artists from the Haja Center. The main event started at 19:00 when Pigheadskin, a guest speaker from Taiwan, discussed his experience of publishing music under Creative Commons licenses. During his presentation he picked up his acoustic guitar and started singing too - the audience was absolutely entranced.

A panel discussion followed, where Korean hip-hop artist, Cho PD, spoke about his understanding of what it means to share music. He also said that at least one of his songs from his next album might be published under Creative Commons license. Then, DJ and hip-hop musician, Garion, presented various remix works created from a single shared music source, and invited artists to distribute it and enjoy.

During the second session a discussion was initiated about the ccMixter Korea project, chaired by Kyung-hoon Jeong, a leader of one of the Korean Wikipedia projects. The ccMixter Korea site is in the process of being developed, and hopefully will be launched next month.

The serious side of the event ended at 21:30 when a mini-concert commenced, featuring Pigheadskin and two Korean musicians, Wani and Taewoo. Almost all participants of the ccSalon stayed until midnight, chatting the night away.

CcKorea would like to make the ccSalon an event focused on building a community of artists who are trying to create and share content on the web. The details of the next event have not been finalised yet, although it will probably be held in October, with the theme ‘podcasting and legal problems’.
