articles · The Art of Free Software

20/6/2007 04:08 · 1 comment

The free culture spaces workshop was a refreshing exchange at iCommons, a free flowing conversation and chance for participants to share their knowledge and experiences. With everyone seated in a circle with stories to share one hour was hardly enough, but it did provide a start in surveying the current topology of free culture spaces.

The conversation was kicked off by Marcel...

A story by Bjorn Wijers and Simon Dingle

Croatia is a land of warm weather, beautiful people, good beer and cats. So many cats. In fact, we spotted some locals with "CC" t-shirts while exploring old town during the iCommons Summit in Dubrovnik, Croatia and excited to speak to local commoners we asked them about their threads. Turns out CC stands for 'Cat Country'. And we're...

articles · Why don't artists use open source software?
by Karen · commented on 20/6/2007 22:46 · 48 votes · 8 comments

By Karen Rustad and Nelson Pavlosky

The topic of the Saturday noon peer production stream session was "Why don't artists use open source software?" However, as was quickly established by the panel, there was also an important companion question: "Why don't developers make free art?"

Artists feel pressured to use open software for ideological reasons, but when they try it typically...
